Mary-Lee Swann karakterinin bir oyunda canlandırdığı Beckett'in Winnie'sinin dediği gibi – “eyes on my eyes”.
Bir de tabii yaralar/yaralılar üzerine..
Karakterlerin çoğunun izlediği/bahsettiği 2. Dünya Savaşı sonrası fiziksel ve
psikolojik yaralarla eve dönen askerleri konu edinen “The Best Years of Our
Lives” filmi yaralarına pansuman yapıp iç çatışmalarını söndürme yolunda eve
dönen Miles Heller’a alegori olarak düşünülebilir.
* The past, then, was
part of the present, and the ghost of Karl Nordstrom was the fifth member of
the household, an absent spirit who had left his mark on Bobby – who was both a
brother and not a brother, both a son and not a son, both a friend and a foe. [Miles
Heller] p.17
* Babies are popping out
all over, in every part of the globe women are huffing and heaving and disgorging
fresh battalions of newborns, doing their bit to prolong the human race, and at
some point in the not-too-distant future se hopes to put her womb to the test
and see if she can’t contribute as well. [Alice Bergstrom] p.70
* Even going out is
fraught with hazards now, for there are days when she can no longer look at the
people she passes on the street without undressing them in her imagination,
stripping off their clothes with a quick, violent tug and then examining their
naked bodies as they walk by. These strangers aren’t people to her anymore,
they are simply the bodies that belong to them, structures of flesh wrapped
around bones and tissue and inner organs, and with the heavy pedestrian traffic
that moves along Seventh Avenue, the street where her office is located,
hundreds if not thousands of specimens are thrust before her eyes every day.
[Ellen Brice] p.82
* The human body is an
instrument of knowledge. [Ellen Brice] p.163
* We do not grow
stronger as the years advance. The accumulation of sufferings and sorrows
weakens our capacity to endure more sufferings and sorrows, and since
sufferings and sorrows are inevitable, even a small setback late in life can
resound with the same force as a major tragedy when we are young. [Moris
Heller] p.198
